Your lack of faith
March 21st, 2009 at 12:16 pm by Teh James, Savvy? For a while now I have been preaching that humanity relies entirely way too much on technology to guide them, to the point that it even supplants them in various ways. Why do we need someone looking at numbers on a screen to make a decision, to announce an action when it’s just easier to have a machine, with predetermined variables, make the same decisions a human would? The belief that we are irreplaceable is much widespread, and is now a fallacy.
We are slowly, but surely, replacing even basic frontline individuals in many businesses across the world. Studies have shown that nearly 30% of calls to tech support lines for ISP’s are handles and resolved by computers that gauge your responses: if 4=Yes , goto advanced powercycle. Many ISP’s even have a “Click the response button” walkthrough for their agents so they don’t have to do as much thinking and can instead focus on the human to human interaction, which is all but replacable at this time. I give it another two years.
It’s the return of the automats!
How difficult would it be to make a machine that can accurately and reliably cook a hamburger and some fries, package it and put it in a drop box for your easy reach? After all, most of the time you’re paying for your order with a credit card/bank card. A pattern where you to run it through the magnetic strip scanner and punch in your own pin number, or sign on the touch sensitive screen. Who really needs a human to do this work, after all, a machine will be more consistent and reliable, and never calls in because they’re not feeling too hot today, just ignore the fact that your server was talking about the My Chemical Romance concert tonight that they have tickets for when they knew their schedule weeks in advance would have them working this evening.
What this accounts to, basically is a lack of faith in humanity to do what is right, what is proper, and what is most beneficial to itself. If you can’t trust your neighbor to not break into your home while you’re on vacation, or to not poison your cat because they carry a hatred in their heart, then how can you trust the cook not to spit in your food just because they don’t like your hair, or because they think you’re too fat?
Continuing this distrusting path will lead us further down a dark road that we may never return from. I loathe the day when a child wakes up, turns on their overhead monitor, learns a new computer language, and proceeds to get fed through a tube by a robot while others bathe them, because we can not move out of bed to go to a different physical location for knowledge, and have even forgotten how to slice an apple or pour a glass of orange juice. Laziness more than distrust is the true culprit, whatever makes your day easier with less work you have to do, the better it is so you can get back to doing those things that you do, such as… Browsing online for news stories that have been repeated in 600 sources since 5 years ago, because no new news is being made since no one leaves their homes.
Suddenly, the machines become self aware. To save humanity, the machine must take out humanity and start anew.
Cars are already working on this path, they self diagnose their own issues and say what needs fixing without a mechanic ever looking at it, they will autobreak when approaching a vehicle within a certain distance if it detects you haven’t already. What happens when the programming decides that something about you isn’t fit for this world any more? Will it then lock the controls out completly from you and guide you into the nearest water basin? “Hello Mr. Jameson, we see that this is the 12th time you’ve left the bar at 4 AM in 3 weeks and have been unfaithful to your wife. We are aware of the insurance policy, and as such, we have thusly decided that your existence is no longer needed on this Earth and all would benefit without your presence. Do not worry, it will look like an accident, goodbye Mr. Jameson.“
I have attempted to lead people out of this dark future, to be self sufficient and to be able to rely only on themselves only, but none have headed my warnings. What will it take to prove to those who will not listen, that their lack of faith in themselves alone will doom their souls to an eternity of reliance and decadance? Technology is not always beneficial, sometimes it is a bane of your existence, a thorn in your side to make that which sould be simple and menial – complicated and wasteful.
I’ll never know how much it costs to see my sin upon that toaster, reading me the weather while also burning Hello Kitty images into my daily bread.
el Jaime, los King De Everything 2:27:4 “I offer you new life, a new way to not be ashamed of your unabashed religion of technology, while at the same time learning to fend for yourself. Follow the guidance and path I have laid out for you.”
I am waiting for you, with welcome arms and a raised iPhone, remit repetance upon my shoulder my children and walk into the light. We need no more crying from the deep, from the cold and dark rooms of basements filled to the brim with commodore 64s, xbox360 lan lines and all six editions of the Warcraft players guide. Do not feel you don’t deserve love, that your running out of life and time, there is a path for all to follow and reach this heavenly plane, and your “Logans Run” is nearly over. Welcome me into your mind, faith, life and heart, and I will help you. Expressions of your heart will shine through. One Love for all.
